Cannon Beach’s Sandcastle Contest is a treasured tradition, held annually for more than 50 years. Almost all events on the Oregon Coast have been canceled this summer, but the Sandcastle Contest is going virtual this year, which means that anyone from across the world can participate. The “Summer of Sandcastles” virtual competition is intended to keep the spirit of the event alive during this time requiring physical distancing for public safety. The Sandcastle contest is an Oregon Heritage Tradition event that has been held since 1964.
“The health of our community, volunteers, competitors, and attendees must come first,” explains Chamber Executive Director, James Paino. “Rather than a one day, large-crowd event, the virtual contest goes the entire summer so more builders can safely participate. There’s no entry fee and thanks to our sponsors, Coaster Construction and The Waves Oceanfront Lodging, we’re still able to offer prizes.”
The contest is open to all ages, team sizes, and skill levels. Entrant’s sandcastle must be built sometime this summer between June 13 and September 7, and participants must submit a photo or short video to enter the contest. There will be winners in two categories: With Haystack Rock in the background or Without Haystack Rock in the background.
Participants and sandcastle aficionados are encouraged to follow the contest on Facebook throughout the summer to see featured entries in different themes like best mermaid, best sandcastle, with a dog, all kids build, and more.
