THE CITY OF Coos Bay celebrates the life and passion of legendary runner Steve Prefontaine when it hosts the annual Prefontaine Memorial 10K Run on Saturday, September 21. The run attracts participants from around the world, and this year has been designated as the Road Runners Club of America Western Regional Championship 10K race. The course follows one of Prefontaine’s favorite training routes—a challenging, rolling course that starts at the Prefontaine monument, then traverses along Ocean Boulevard and back, passing by the Prefontaine family residence with a finish at the Marshfield High School track named in his honor. A 5K fun run/walk begins at the rear of the 10K start pack and follows the same course until they turn around at the 2-mile mark and head back to the Marshfield track.(prefontainerun.com) For those who come to run, or just watch and cheer, there are many fun events scheduled throughout the same weekend for the Bay Area Fun Festival, September 21–22. The festival includes a parade on Saturday in downtown Coos Bay; a car show, Cruz the Coos, that takes place the same day at the Mill Casino Hotel, with a car cruise in downtown Coos Bay starting at 6 p.m. (cruzthecoos.com); live music performances throughout the weekend; a craft and foods fair in downtown Coos Bay; and the 25th annual Coos Sand ‘n Sea Quilters Quilt Show, held September 21 and 22 at the Boys & Girls Club.
